The Scorpion Pose, or Vrischikasana, is a deep balancing pose. It may look intimidating, but with practice, this is a posture within the intermediate level.

About Scorpion Pose

Vrischikasana comes from the Sanskrit word for scorpion, "vrischika." In full posture, the yogi resembles a scorpion with its tail high in the air.

This asana has the primary benefit of stretching the:

  • Chest
  • Neck
  • Spine

Do not perform scorpion pose if you have severe shoulder or neck problems.

Step into the Pose

To Perform Scorpion Pose

  1. Begin in Child's pose, leaving the forearms and elbows flat on the floor.
  2. Arc your head up and back, and then push your buttocks into the air and lift up onto your toes.
  3. On an inhale, swing your legs up, as if going into a handstand. Align them over your head.
  4. On an exhale, bend the knees, letting the feet extend out over the front of the head.
  5. Hold for 20 seconds, and release with control back into Child's pose.

It is highly recommended to first perform this pose under the direction of a certified instructor.


It is best to be adept at other balancing postures before attempting this, and then ask a yoga teacher to guide you. Practicing against a wall will reinforce form.


As your body increases flexibility, rest your feet atop your head.
